This past weekend, all roads in the east coast led to the “Eat Write Retreat” Conference in Washington D.C. Food bloggers and writers were coming together for a 3-day event. It was three nonstop days of hands-on workshops on writing, cooking, food styling & photography, panel discussions, guest speakers, restaurant tastings & historical tour and so much more. It was loaded with food, friends and fun.
I always try to find a lesson to learn on any given day. And “Eat Write Retreat” was packed with it. Here’s what I walked away with :
TOP THINGS I LEARNED AT “Eat Write Retreat” :
- Monica Bhide : “To become a good writer, let everything go. Resistance is futile. Be like water. It goes anywhere.”
- Rodger Helwig, California Endive : ” Endive is available all year long.”
- Fran Brennan : “Everybody loves food. It’s a topic that will not cause disagreements at a gathering.”
- CulinAerie : “One year in the kitchen does not make a person a chef. It takes years!”
- Casey Benedict : ” Bring a bag for the swag !”
- DC Tours : ” El Salvadorians are the largest ethnic group today in D.C.”
- Priya : “96% of successful businesses use Social Media Networking .”
- Domenica Marchetti : “There’s always fresh inspiration to be had.”
- Jennifer Perillo. : Your Mom’s love lives on in the recipes you blog about.”
- Shauna James Ahern : “Do what you love.”
- Jael McHenry: “Be something. Mean something. Be consistent.”
- Pam Anderson: “Times are shifting in publishing. If you haven’t blogged, you will be so far behind.”
- Joe Yonan : “Editors want good IDEAS.”
- Justin Schwartz: ” Bring a vast social media network of followers with you to get a book published.”
- Robyn Webb : “We needed an event that will bring together food bloggers in the east.”
- Lisa Cherkasky & Renee Comet: ” Warm the food before you photograph. Makes a big difference.”
- Brona Cosgrave: “Mommy bloggers: moms online are a virtual powerhouse.”
- Laura T., food blogger : “When does a recipe become your own?”
- Daphne : “Finally, I can learn Filipino recipes in your food blog.”
- Saul, the friendly waiter at The Madison/ Postscript Lounge : “Thank you for visiting D.C. There are lots of places to see. Come back again, soon.”

That’s an excellent collection of useful quotes! I like it. Especially since I’m still trying to process the whole weekend. And, of course, the mangoes and fish fritters have me drooling all over again!
Thanks,Melissa! So nice of you ! I really enjoyed sharing the sessions with you.
Great recap! It was so nice to meet you, in addition to finding a new type of food to explore that your site offers, I found you to be a warm and wonderful soul! Glad I met you
Thanks, Colleen! It’s so heartwarming of you to say that! Looking forward to sharing food stories with you. And will definitely get hold of your cookbook soon.

Thanks, Justin! I’m so honored by your nice remarks. Thanks again for the valuable advice.

Great things to have come away with from your weekend and I’m sure you also came back with even more wonderful friends than when you left to attend it!
Thanks, Paula! You captured my sentiments so well. I think more than anything, the new friendships made were precious!
Hi Betty Ann.
Thanks for the awesome list of quotes from Eat Write Retreat. I was there, but I’m not sure we got a chance to chat. One thing I learned is how hard endives are to grow and that there’s only one grower in the US. Who knew!
I hope we can meet up again next year.
Valerie, thanks for the kind words & for dropping by. Too bad there wasn’t enough time at Eat Write Retreat for all of us to share food stories. Yes, thanks for the info on endives. It was an eye-opener. Love your site http://www.feastie.com ! I have bookmarked it and will come see you soon. Same here, see you at EWR12 !
Mike and I really enjoyed cooking with you at CulinAerie, sharing lunch with you and Elpi (did I spell that right?) at the McCormick & Schmick’s lunch, and sharing observations about the wine and the weekend with you! Hope to do it again!
Thanks, Renee! The feeling is mutual. Elpi & I had a great time sharing lunch with you and Mike. We enjoyed your company and the stories you told us. And yes, the CulinAerie workshop was so much fun. Hope we meet again at the next event!
You are one of the sweetest people I have every met. Thank you for all your kind words and I cannot wait to tackle some of your recipes in the future!
Thanks, Kimmy! So kind of you to say that. Hope to spend more time with you at the next event! I love you blog and can’t wait to try your recipes!
Betsy, Thank you for sharing all that you learned. Every one of our presenters had a unique message for us to take away. Bonnie
Thanks, Bonnie ! We had such a marvelous time at EWR11 !
All beautiful and wise words of advice! Wish I could have been there!
Thanks! Eat Write Retreat was really terrific!
Would love to have attended this would you. It could have been more fun don’t you think? or we might just be giggling and making chismis haha. so having said that, it might have been better without me around or else these quotes you wrote here slipped your attention.. haha!
Malou, would have enjoyed your company! But I’m sure we’d have caused so much trouble together!!! Maybe next time I can go to a bloggers’ conf. in the west coast and see you all.
